Sydney, Australia

The Sydney skyline shimmered in the evening sky. Daria twirled her glass of scotch, the ice cubes in the delicate crystal tinkling hypnotically.

Andrei had insisted he was the man to run the New Zealand operation. She’d not been convinced from the start, but somehow she’d agreed. Her brother drove her absolutely fucking nuts! He was stroppy and overconfident, but when it came to the business end of the transaction, it was as if he couldn’t operate logically. She was sick of cleaning up his mess. She’d always been the one who stayed calm in the face of adversity and had bailed him out on more than one occasion. The latest clusterfuck of events was more than she could accept. It was one thing to have lost one of the guys, but to now have a personal vendetta against them made her really annoyed.

It was Murphy’s Law that the man who had fallen overboard was the nephew of Big Ed. It wouldn’t have been an issue if it had been anyone else. Instead, they were in the firing line for the vendetta and had Big Ed stomping around like a wounded bull. Andrei gave her no confidence in how he’d handled the current situation. There was only one thing to do—fly back to New Zealand and sort out the sordid mess.

She reached forward for the phone on the coffee table and opened the Air New Zealand app. Her personal details flashed up on the screen, along with a question about where she’d like to book her travel. Daria keyed in Auckland on a one-way trip and scrolled down to the travel dates field. Her finger lingered over tomorrow morning’s departure, but she thought the better of it and booked the one-fifteen flight in the afternoon, which would get her into Auckland just after six in the evening.

Mother and father would be thrilled to see her; she hadn’t been home since Easter. Work kept her busy. She’d built her legitimate business from the ground up, and she was now Australia’s biggest coffee importer. Not only did she personally oversee every aspect, from the quality to the distribution, but she was also priced very competitively.

She looked around her penthouse apartment, which she’d paid for in cash. She was immensely proud of the fact that she had built her business without help from her father, unlike Andrei, who’d simply taken over the family business when their father had retired.

He had never needed to fight for things the way she had to as a woman and completely on her own. She knew her father respected her for her hard work and resilience.

Not long after she’d started out, an opportunity arose to diversify the business during one of her early trips to South America. It had been suggested by people whom she’d crossed paths with that adding a few more strings to her budding empire might be mutually beneficial. She thought about it and took the opportunity, fully aware of the conditions and the strings attached.
